Otter in Spalted Beech

This Otter is carved from a single piece of spalted Beech,
The spalting is a fungal disease that is part of the braking down and rotting process in wood but if the spallting is done in a controlled way and stopped before the rot sets in it can leave some nice figuring pattens in the wood, spalted timber is mainly used by wood turners because the wood can be a bit unpredictable with soft rotten parts and very hard parts which can make the carving very difficult.
But the patterns from the spalting in the grain make it all worth while.
